wire mesh food strainer set

Tool time the kitchen tools and gadgets I love.

Okay, I'm not going to deny it I am more of a Martha Stewart/Rose Levy Bernbaum type baker than "a Nigella". My friend Cindy will tell you I'm very attached to my mesh strainers!

I'm still baking at the moment, a Nigella recipe; Nigella doesn't sift the ingredients, I tried to restrain myself from sifting but the urge was too strong & I just had to sift the bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) in with the flour!

Wire mesh strainers whether you have a set like what is pictured above or a single plastic rimmed one from a discount store are invaluable in baking.

10 seconds; that's how long it took to sift the flour and bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) together, 10 seconds. Plonk the ingredients into the mesh strainer, hold the strainer in one hand over the mixing bowl tap the side of the strainer with the open palm of your other hand.

lumps in cocoa and bicarbonate of soda

I don't want lumps of cocoa in my cakes, or cakes that don't rise evenly due the leavening agent not being properly incorporated, I'm sure either do you.... so pick yourself a wire strainer and "sift it!".

Tomorrow Nigella's delicious cupcakes.

Happy Baking :)
